    Where the casino is

Bear Claw Casino & Hotel stands beside Highway 9, north of the town of Carlyle. The casino occupies White Bear First Nations land in Saskatchewan's southeast, among the Moose Mountains. On the Highway 9 desk's map, Carlyle is 14 km from the casino as a direct line, not by road. Its mailing address reads Box 1210, Carlyle SK S0C 0R0.

The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA), a First Nations non-profit with seven casinos across Saskatchewan, operates Bear Claw. Doors first opened in 1993, and the provincial government closed the casino about three months later. That closure is part of a contested chapter in the gaming dispute between First Nations and the province. Bear Claw opened again in November 1996 and has kept operating ever since. The hotel was added on July 1, 2010.

    On the casino floor

Bear Claw's casino is open daily, 11 am until midnight. Every time in this guide is Central Standard Time, which Saskatchewan uses through the whole year. The casino posts no holiday schedule, so anyone planning a holiday visit should look at bearclawcasino.ca beforehand. Over 130 slot machines line the floor, in 1¢, 5¢, 25¢ and $1 denominations.

At Bear Claw, the electronic table games are called The Circuit: Baccarat, Blackjack, Roulette and Three-Card Poker. Until 4 pm they run on auto play, meaning the game deals itself. A live dealer takes over from 4 pm to midnight. The casino posts no separate schedule for live tables, so a call to 306-577-4577 settles it. Gambling here is only for those aged 19 or older.

The King Junior Suite is more spacious, with one king bed for 2 people. The King Executive Suite also sleeps 2 and adds a jacuzzi spa tub. A child under 12 stays at no charge alongside an adult. Pets are welcome, for an extra charge, in designated pet-friendly queen rooms. The drive from nearby towns

Each distance below is a straight map line from the casino, so the actual road trip runs longer. Carlyle lies 14 km south, Arcola 20 km southwest. Kipling sits 45 km northwest, Estevan 85 km southwest and Weyburn 113 km west. Regina is 182 km to the northwest.

Bear Claw charges nothing for parking and says there is plenty of room. RV guests must be 19+ and register at Guest Services, showing a SIGA Rewards card. Spots go to whoever arrives first, and six of them offer 110V electric hookups. Tents may go on the grassy parts of the lot, though open fires are banned.

    Moose Mountain and nearby

The places below are nearby and reached by car. Moose Mountain Provincial Park and Cannington Manor Provincial Historic Park are two of them. Golfers can choose White Bear Lake Golf Course or Golf Kenosee. The Moose Mountain area has poplar and birch trees, rolling hills and trails for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. There is also camping, boating, swimming and tennis, plus The Red Market Barn and Sask Aquatic Adventures.

    The SIGA Rewards card

A SIGA Rewards card comes at no charge, and the same card is accepted at all seven SIGA casinos in Saskatchewan. The tiers run in four steps, from Emerald to Gold, Platinum and Diamond. At Bear Claw, card holders take 10% off restaurant and deli orders and 10% off the hotel's regular room rate. RV guests also need the card when they check in at Guest Services.

    Online play in Saskatchewan

Of all online gambling options, only PlayNow.com is legal in Saskatchewan, and SIGA operates it. Its players must be 19 and older. Private sites that compete with PlayNow.com are called illegal platforms by the provincial government. SIGA is also the operator of Bear Claw Casino near Carlyle.

Carlyle Casino Trip keeps paid links off every page but the home page, where the Highway 9 desk stamps each one with Ad. Each of those links takes readers to one partner: a privately owned online casino paying the Highway 9 desk a commission. Down the road, the Carlyle guide could swap it for another. The partner is not PlayNow.com, has no Saskatchewan licence, and is unconnected to SIGA, Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan or any casino the Highway 9 desk writes about. Self-exclusion means a person banning their own gambling, and the Saskatchewan programs for it stop short of this partner.

    Help with gambling

    • For gambling worries, the Highway 9 desk points to 1-800-306-6789, the Saskatchewan Problem Gambling Helpline: confidential, no cost, with trained counsellors on shift 24 hours a day.
    • SIGA Voluntary Self-Exclusion: a request made in person at any SIGA casino, setting a ban between 6 months and 5 years that covers all nine casinos in Saskatchewan.
    • SaskGaming runs Game Break, a voluntary self-exclusion lasting 6 months to 5 years that covers each casino across the province, plus PlayNow.com.
